A Backstage Look

As our volunteer guides will tell you, musicians aren’t the only ones who can help deliver the healing power of music. As a guide, these volunteers act as a liaison between the patients and/or family members.

Dave, a former Volunteer Guide at The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP), witnessed MOC Moments regularly at the ICU, but one story stood out in his mind the most.

Here is what Dave had to say!

My favorite moment came in a room with a man who had [a major operation]. The nurse said she hadn’t seen any movement or response from this man since he was admitted to the hospital. But almost immediately as the wonderful musician started to play, he began to stir. The nurse broke down in tears of pure joy, while the musician and myself, as her guide, did all we could to get through the performance. By the end, the patient was smiling as best he could and as we all left the room, we all broke out in tears of pure joy. The nurse thanked us over and over but we just told her we had already been thanked as much as her! Joy and beauty for all. All because of the power of music! We will all never forget. Thanks MOC for a once of many once in a lifetime experience!

It’s great when the whole family gets to experience the healing power of music. Thanks, Dave, for sharing your story!

Have you been visited by one of our Molunteer Musicians? Tell us all about it! We can’t wait to hear how our volunteers helped deliver the healing power of music.
